Apple’s next AirPods Pro were rumored to gain built-in cameras, marking one of the biggest upgrades in the earbuds’ history — large enough that  the product may be dubbed AirPods Ultra instead. However, Apple is reportedly shelving those plans for now.

A reliable leaker now claims Apple “suspended” the project. But it’s unclear whether the company canceled the feature or simply delayed it.

Apple may delay its biggest AirPods upgrade yet

Multiple rumors over the last year or so suggested the AirPods Pro 4 would include built-in cameras. Not actual cameras, as on iPhones, but infrared cameras. This would allow them to support hand gestures and deliver enhanced spatial audio.

The IR cameras would also feed visual information to Siri AI, enabling many useful real-world features. For example, a user who glances at a refrigerator full of ingredients can simply ask Siri what to cook for dinner, with the AI assistant drawing on what the cameras see.

A report in May even claimed development of the camera-equipped AirPods Pro was complete, hinting at a launch in the second half of 2026 or early 2027.

But now Kosutami shared a claim on X that Apple internally marked the camera-equipped AirPods project as “suspended.” The leaker did not provide a reason for the apparent pause.

Why Apple may have hit the pause button?

Ongoing supply chain issues and rising component costs hitting the entire electronic industry could be a factor. Or Apple may have realized that Siri and Visual Intelligence are still not at the stage needed to fully utilize the upcoming AirPods’s IR cameras.

The leaker has a generally accurate track record when it comes to Apple rumors, so there’s reason to trust the claim.

Apple is working on several new wearables, including smart glasses. Camera-equipped AirPods could eventually complement those devices by feeding additional visual data while remaining far more discreet than glasses.
